Ellenville teen drowns in Wawarsing
WAWARSING, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- State Police are investigating after an Ellenville teen drowned at the Split Rock swimming hole in Wawarsing. Troopers identified the victim as 14-year-old Charief Spratley.
The preliminary investigation found that Spratley was swimming with friends when he went under water and did not resurface. State Police said his friends attempted to save him, but they were unsuccessful and they called emergency services immediately.
Troopers searched the water but were initially unsuccessful in finding Spratley. The Ulster Hose Company 5 Dive Team eventually recovered Spratley's body from the water and he was unresponsive.
Emergency responders initiated lifesaving measures but Spratley was ultimately pronounced deceased on the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
