Why 'The Hunting Wives' Isn't a Netflix Original & Could Eventually Leave the Streaming Service
The new series The Hunting Wives just debuted on Netflix, but it’s actually not an original show created by the streamer and it possibly won’t remain on there forever.
Malin Akerman and Brittany Snow lead the cast of the new thriller series, which debuted today (July 21).
When the show was originally greenlit back in late 2023, it was set up at Starz with Lionsgate Television as the studio behind the project. The project was filmed in 2024 and has been sitting around waiting for a release since then.

It all has to do with Lionsgate and Starz’s separation, which happened in May 2025.
When the two companies split, Lionsgate acquired the show back from Starz so that they could seek a home for the show where there could potentially be a multi-season run, according to Deadline.
The outlet reports that “Netflix’s The Hunting Wives exclusive deal is for one year,” so that means another streamer could obtain the rights after that. Lionsgate is seeking a buyer for the international rights.
