Doctors Remove Pregnant Mom’s Uterus and Baby to Treat Her Cancer
In a groundbreaking medical procedure, doctors at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust successfully removed the uterus of a 12-weeks-pregnant woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer, preserving both her life and that of her unborn child.
With the surgery, doctors treated the cancer and re-implanted the uterus back into her body so Lucy Isaac could finish her pregnancy and give birth to her baby.
The innovative surgery, performed at the John Radcliffe Hospital, marked a significant advancement in balancing life-saving cancer treatment with the protection of the unborn child.
Isaac, 33, faced a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer, requiring urgent intervention. Standard surgery was not an option due to her pregnancy, prompting the medical team to devise a novel approach.

“We removed the entire uterus with the baby still inside, treated the cancer, and then placed the uterus back,” said Dr. Hooman Soleyman, consultant gynecological surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals. “This was a highly complex procedure, but it allowed us to address the cancer while prioritizing the safety of the fetus.”
The procedure, described as a world-first by the hospital, involved a multi-disciplinary team of 30 staff members from gynecology, oncology, obstetrics, and other specialties. The surgery was completed successfully, and Isaac and baby are doing great after birth.
Hooman Soleymani Majd said: “I am pleased with the success of the procedure. It was a complex and challenging operation, but the dedication and expertise of our multidisciplinary team ensured a positive outcome for both Lucy and her baby.
“When baby Rafferty, visited us at two weeks after being born, it was immensely emotional moment for me and the team.
“This achievement not only highlights the advancements in medical science but also reinforces our commitment to providing innovative and life-saving procedures. I am grateful for the trust placed in us, and proud of the collaborative effort that made this possible.”
Lucy said: “I had no symptoms before the diagnosis. I feel incredibly lucky that I was not only diagnosed in time, but also able to undergo the procedure without jeopardising my pregnancy.
“My husband Adam and I were made aware of the risks, but we had faith in Mr Hooman Soleymani Majd and the team. I am immensely grateful to everyone involved in saving me and my baby.”
It was especially emotional for the family as Adam Isaac, Lucy’s husband, had only been able to start a family after being given a kidney by a friend, which was transplanted in November 2022.
Adam said: “To finally hold Rafferty in our arms after everything we have been through was the most amazing moment.
