How Amorim’s treatment of free agent cost Man United chance to sign £63.4m star
Manchester United will likely miss out on signing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres as he has prioritised joining Arsenal.
A deal in principle is in place, with an agreement of £54.8 million (fixed) plus £8.6m in add-ons, while the striker’s agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, has waived his commission to help facilitate the move.
Gyokeres reportedly rejected a move to Man United because of the lack of Champions League football. He is also unconvinced about the club’s project.
Portuguese outlet Record have now shed more light on why the 27-year-old does not favour a move to Old Trafford.
They claim Gyokeres and Cetinkaya are not happy with the treatment manager Ruben Amorim gave Victor Lindelof, who left United as a free agent.
Lindelof, who is also one of Cetinkaya’s clients, wanted to stay at United if offered a new deal, but Amorim did not favour him.
Cetinkaya is angered by the fact that he convinced Gyokeres to join Sporting under Amorim in the summer of 2023, despite interest from eight Premier League clubs.
With a deal for Gyokeres’ now almost beyond reach, United have reportedly set sights on Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson and RB Leipzig marksman Benjamin Sesko.
There is a chance Jackson leaves the Blues this summer following the arrival of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, who appear to be ahead of him in the pecking order.
However, a deal for Jackson will be financially difficult for United as Chelsea want between £80m and £100m for him.
Meanwhile, United have reportedly intensified their interest in Sesko with Director of Recruitment, Christopher Vivell, leading the negotiation.
As it stands, a move for either Sesko or Jackson is likely to happen after United raise sufficient funds through player sales in the coming weeks.
