No to stigma against albinism: Mavetera

INFORMATION Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera has called on Zimbabweans to join hands in the fight to end stigma against people living with albinism.
Minister Mavetera, who is also the Member of Parliament for Chikomba West, made the call while officiating at a recent Albinism Awareness Tea Party held at the Beatrice Country Club in Seke District.
The event was held under the theme “Tea with Purpose: Honouring Stories of Strength in Albinism. Bridging Gaps, Breaking Stigma.”
The event was hosted by the BAWLS Foundation in partnership with the Haikona Kutya Family Foundation, founded by Star FM radio presenter Aaron Dobie, and brought together community members, stakeholders, and advocates in a powerful gathering of support and celebration.
“Today, we have come and gathered here to support this initiative, which is in sync with the national vision, which is to ensure no one and no place is being left behind in terms of development and anything that uplifts people’s livelihoods,” Minister Mavetera said.
“I am happy that those living with albinism are making great achievements in life. You saw one of them, who is a teacher giving his remarks here, this is wonderful.
“I am humbled by the testimonies that many of them have shared with us today. It gives us a better understanding that it is only a condition they have, but that condition did not stop them from achieving their goals, just like anyone else.
“Let me tell you this, living with albinism does not change who you are as a person. You are just like any other person. So I appeal to everyone gathered here to shun any form of discrimination against people living with albinism. Some of you here might pretend not to stigmatise them, but when you go out there, you do the opposite. That should stop.”
