Over 50 UK Charities Urge Government to Ease Family Reunification for Afghan Allies at Risk

Over 50 UK charities have urged the government to swiftly reunite Afghan families at risk, following a major data leak endangering asylum seekers.

More than 50 refugee charities and legal advocacy organizations have called on the British government to urgently facilitate the safe relocation and reunification of Afghan families who had supported UK forces during the war in Afghanistan.

According to reports published by Western media on Tuesday, August 5, the organizations submitted a joint letter to UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, urging her to simplify the process for family reunification. They emphasized that many relatives of Afghans now residing in Britain remain in grave danger, facing threats of retaliation from the Taliban.

This appeal follows revelations of a serious security breach at the UK Ministry of Defence in February 2022, when the personal details of thousands of Afghan nationals—many of whom claimed they were at risk and had applied for asylum in Britain—were mistakenly made public online.

The leaked list reportedly included the names of individuals eligible for resettlement under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), a program designed to support those who had directly worked with British forces in Afghanistan. The breach has since endangered hundreds of individuals and their families, many of whom remain stranded in unsafe conditions abroad.

Charities warn that the current delays and lack of effective procedures are placing lives at risk and undermining the UK’s moral responsibility to protect its Afghan allies. They stress the need for safe, legal pathways and a clear, responsive system for family reunification.

The organizations also called for greater transparency and accountability from the government to prevent such failures in the future. They emphasized that urgent reforms are necessary to rebuild trust in the UK’s refugee resettlement commitments and to avert further humanitarian crises.
