Rwanda-backed rebels have killed at least 80 people in eastern Congo, according to Congolese authorities. The army condemned the attacks in South Kivu, including 80 people on August 4 in Nyaborongo and six civilians on July 24 in Lumbishi. The ongoing violence threatens Qatar-led peace efforts aimed at securing a permanent deal by Aug. 18. Earlier this month, the U.N. human rights chief reported that M23 rebels killed 319 people in North Kivu. M23 denies the accusations, calling them unverified. The rebels previously seized key cities in eastern Congo with Rwandan support.
