Flash floods triggered by torrential rains have killed more than 200 people in India and Pakistan. Over the past 24 hours, officials say rescuers have brought around 1,600 people to safety from two mountainous districts. In India-controlled Kashmir, flash floods have left at least 60 people dead and 80 missing. Rescuers have saved at least 300 people, but many remain unaccounted for. In Pakistan, flash floods have killed at least 164 people in the past 24 hours, and rescuers evacuated 1,300 stranded tourists. Sudden, intense downpours over small areas known as cloudbursts are increasingly common in India’s Himalayan regions and Pakistan’s northern areas.
