Guatemalan authorities have freed nine prison guards held hostage since Thursday by rioting inmates in Guatemala City. Members of the Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs began rioting Tuesday in two prisons. They demanded the return of 10 leaders transferred to another facility and placed in solitary confinement. José Portillo, Deputy Minister of Security, said the guards were held by Mara Salvatrucha members. One prison official died Friday after being shot. Earlier this year, Mara Salvatrucha was designated a terrorist organization by U.S. President Donald Trump. In a similar incident, anti-kidnapping teams freed 11 guards on Wednesday.
