Brent Hinds Dead: Mastodon Co-Founder Dies at 51 After Motorcycle Accident
Brent Hinds, the co-founder and guitarist of the Grammy-winning heavy metal band Mastodon, has sadly died. He was 51.
According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office, Brent was killed in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta on Wednesday night (August 20). Police confirmed that an SUV failed to yield at an intersection, causing the crash, per THR.

Brent helped form Mastodon in 2000 alongside Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor. Together, they released eight studio albums including 2002’s Remission and 2021’s Hushed and Grim. The band earned six Grammy nominations over the years and won Best Metal Performance in 2018 for their song “Sultan’s Curse.”
Earlier this year, Brent parted ways with the band. At the time, Mastodon said they were “deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared.”
In a heartbreaking message posted to Instagram, Mastodon paid tribute to their late bandmate: “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked and still trying to process the loss of this creative force… Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”
