Powerball jackpot hits $700M: How long do you have to buy tickets before the next drawing?

(NEXSTAR) — The Powerball jackpot has yet again grown after no ticket was able to match the numbers drawn Wednesday night. The jackpot now sits just outside of the top 10 largest in the game's history.

The numbers drawn on Wednesday — 31, 59, 62, 65, 68, and Powerball 5 — included one "overdue" number, but it wasn't enough to produce a winner. The drawing represented the 35th since the Powerball jackpot, then estimated at $204.5 million, was last won on May 31 by a ticket sold in California.

Without a winner, the jackpot now sits at an estimated $700 million with a cash value of $316.3 million. That puts it at No. 11 on the list of largest Powerball jackpots since 2003:

It's not far from cracking into the top 10, either. The current jackpot is about $31.2 million from surpassing a 2021 grand prize won in Maryland. There is a chance that the top prize will grow before the next drawing, set for 9:59 p.m. CT on Saturday.

That means you still have plenty of time to buy tickets (maybe even enough to ensure you win the jackpot) and test your lucky numbers.

How close you can buy your tickets to the draw time, however, will vary based on where you live.

In several states — Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Wyoming — ticket sales stop an hour before the Powerball drawing. Similarly, these states end Powerball sales at 9 p.m. CT: Louisiana, CaliforniaConnecticutFloridaGeorgiaIllinoisKentucky, Minnesota, Montana, NebraskaNew MexicoNew YorkOhioOregonSouth DakotaTennesseeTexas, and Wisconsin.

Four states take their draw breaks (the time in which tickets can no longer be sold for the upcoming drawing) at 9:50 p.m. ET: MaineMassachusetts, New HampshireRhode Island, and Vermont. In other states — Delaware, Washington, and the District of Columbia — the cutoff is five minutes earlier at 9:45 p.m. ET.

Here’s a look at when other states pause ticket sales on Powerball draw nights:

  • Arizona: 6:59 p.m. local time until daylight saving time ends, then 7:59 p.m. local time
  • Colorado: 7:30 p.m. local time
  • Idaho: 1 hour and five minutes before the drawing
  • Indiana: 9:58 p.m. local time
  • Michigan: 9:58 p.m. local time
  • North Dakota: 8:58 p.m. local time

Some states may have different cut-off times for tickets being purchased online. You’ll want to check with your local lottery before buying any last-minute tickets.

Powerball is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Your odds of landing the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
