Taylor Swift's Emotional Speech at Selena Gomez's Wedding May Have Thrown Subtle Shade at Justin Bieber
Taylor Swift is proving that her loyalty to Selena Gomez runs deep.
On Gomez’s wedding day to Benny Blanco, the 35-year-old pop star “gave an extremely heartfelt speech” to the bride about her former loves. Swift essentially gave Blanco her valued stamp of approval while subtly shading the Only Murders in the Building star’s most famous ex, Justin Bieber.
“She went into depth and talked about how over the years she saw Selena on the floor crying, mentioning exes, Selena having a broken heart, and saying how happy she is that Selena has Benny now,” a source told Us Weekly. Swift proved that she’s a girl’s girl and “said it is a best friend’s dream for her best friend to find someone like Benny, and [she] is so happy for her.”
Gomez had a tumultuous romance with Bieber that was hard to keep up with. It was an on-again, off-again relationship that spanned from 2010 to 2018. She hinted on the Table Manners podcast in April about why she took time off from dating after dating Bieber.
“I hadn’t liked anyone in a very long time,” Gomez explained about kissing Blanco for the first time. “So some kisses are for fun, and then when you feel something behind a kiss, it’s completely different. And I’d been alone for about five years, with the exception of a few shitty dates here and there, but never felt that way. And I was a little embarrassed.”
The Bieber relationship had taken its toll on her, especially since there was a fan-driven rivalry between Gomez’s fans and those supporting Hailey Bieber. The “Who Says” singer commented about that parasocial situation in her Apple TV+ documentary, My Mind & Me, in 2022.
“I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of,” she said. “But then I just moved past it. I wasn’t afraid anymore.”
Swift saw how Gomez thrived once she put the toxicity of the Bieber relationship behind her. It’s why she described Blanco as “the most perfect person” for her best friend, per a Daily Mail source. The wedding insider noted that Swift summed up Gomez and Bianco’s marriage best: “It isn’t luck that they found each other, it’s love.”
