Yankees Rookie Pitcher Trolls Red Sox Fan Influencer After Epic Performance

Cam Schlittler was feeling himself after delivering a performance for the ages in his first postseason start as a member of the New York Yankees.

Schlittler, a 24-year-old rookie, threw eight shutout innings, striking out 12 and surrendering five hits and no walks, as he helped the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4-0 in a winner-take-all Game 3 of their American League Wild Card Series.

A native of Walpole, Massachusetts, Schlittler grew up a Red Sox fan, but he's all about the pinstripes now. Following the victory, the fireballing righthander spent some time trolling on social media.

Most notably, Schlittler responded to a Lucy Burdge, a Red Sox superfan and gambling influencer for DraftKings, who earlier in the night tweeted a selfie in a Sox jersey with the caption "Sox in 3."

“Not this year,” Schlittler wrote.

Schlittler's taunting of Burdge came after he had already trolled the city of Boston in a previous tweet.

"Drinking dat dirty water," he wrote.

'Silent killer' Cam

It's not easy for a rookie with only 14 career MLB starts under his belt to be thrust into the white heat of baseball's biggest rivalry in a playoff elimination game.

Schlittler looked comfortable from the outset though, mowing down his former favorite team's lineup and allowing only one hitter to reach second base all evening.

“It’s personal for me,” Schlittler said after the game. “People from Boston had a lot to say before the game, so for me, just being a silent killer, being able to go out there and shut them down.

“We’re aggressive back home and we’re going to try to get under people’s skins. They just picked the wrong guy to do it to — and the wrong team to do it to as well.”

'A star is born'

Schlittler's performance was history-making as well, as he became the first pitcher to record at least eight shutout innings with at least 12 strikeouts and zero walks in a postseason game, according to ESPN Research.

"A star is born tonight," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Going north

With the win, the Yankees moved on to the American League Division Series, where they will face another AL East rival, the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Jays and Yankees finished the regular season with identical 94-68 records, but Toronto won the division and earned the AL's No. 1 overall seed by virtue of winning the season series.

Game 1 between the Yankees and Blue Jays is set for 4:08 p.m. ET Saturday on FOX.
