Shots fired at Border Patrol from Mexico, sector chief says

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Police in Juarez, Mexico, on Friday surrounded a house near the Rio Grande where they believed men who shot at the U.S. Border Patrol earlier in the day were hiding.

It was the second of two shootings happening hours apart and allegedly targeting Border Patrol, or heard and reported by U.S. border agents, reliable sources told Border Report.

The first shots rang out Thursday afternoon near the Big Red X monument in Juarez, which is a short distance away from the river and the U.S. border wall. The shots did not strike any border agents and it’s unknown if the bullets even crossed the border.

The second set of shots were fired in the direction of Border Patrol agents from Mexico west of the Paso del Norte international bridge. They were fired as agents were attempting to apprehend a group of migrants and their foot guides, knowledgeable sources told Border Report.

A few hours after that second shooting, the Juarez municipal police and the Mexican National Guard surrounded a neighborhood where they suspected the assailants were hiding out.

No arrests were immediately reported.

In a statement to Border Report, the Border Patrol's El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent, Anthony "Scott" Good, confirmed that one of his agents reported being shot at from the Mexican bank of the Rio Grande. Good said it happened at 7:44 a.m. Friday morning as the agent chased a group of migrants. He said additional Border Patrol agents responded in a "show of force."

No agents fired their weapons and no injuries were reported, the statement read.

Good added that due to recent enforcement efforts that have successfully targeted criminal activities along the border in El Paso, U.S. Border Patrol agents have been targeted and have experienced a "notable" rise in violence and assaults.

"We take any threat or act of violence against our Border Patrol agents with the utmost seriousness" Good said. "Such violence will not be tolerated, those responsible will be relentlessly pursued and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Good was the El Paso Sector's chief patrol agent from March 2023 to February 2025, when Walter Slosar was named interim chief patrol agent. A CBP spokesman told Border Report that Good has since returned and has taken over his old post as chief patrol agent of the El Paso Sector.

This is a developing story and will be updated as warranted.
