Wave Pool Powerhouse Partners With Formula 1 Track Designer
What do surfers and Formula 1 racers have in common? Not much.
That is, until now. In a new move, Wavegarden has announced a partnership with Tilke, an architectural company that designs racetracks, self-described as “a world-class German firm specializing in Formula 1 and MotoGP track design.”
And so, with that new partnership, the differing worlds of manmade surfing and high-octane vehicles speeding around a track, will soon come to fruition. No official projects are in the works, yet, but there’s renderings of what the marriage will look like – and they show a standard Wavegarden Cove basin, surrounded by circuitous racing roadways.
Although Tilke is responsible for some of the tracks featured on the popular Formula 1 circuit, the collaboration with Wavegarden appears geared towards more of an amateur, hobbyist market. Additionally, the coming collab will be part of a membership and/or resort-style experience, aiming to tap into the market of both car lovers and surfers.
Per a press release, Wavegarden announced:
“The car racing circuits will soon feature Wavegarden surf lagoons surrounded by white sandy beaches, luxury villas, restaurants, spas, and a variety of outdoor activities. This innovative concept marks the first time that motorsport and surfing have been brought together on a global scale, setting a new benchmark for premium sports experiences.
“These destinations will unite motorsport and surfing into a cohesive global community, accessible through tiered membership programs. Members will have access to Tilke’s existing network of 18 private racing circuits across five continents, 5 under construction and 27 more currently in development - all now enhanced by Wavegarden’s Cove technology, capable of producing more than 25 wave types, from gentle whitewater for beginners to barrels and aerial sections for expert surfers.”
No word yet on when the racetracks will be retrofitted with Wavegarden’s patented Cove technology – but according to the press release, all Tilke racetracks will be upgraded to feature world-class wave pools…sometime in the future.
