Ta’Kiya Young had big dreams for her growing family, and for herself. The 21-year-old Ohio woman loved to spoil her two small boys and was thrilled to be expecting a daughter. She hoped to become a social worker. Instead, she and her unborn daughter were fatally shot in a grocery store parking lot by an officer responding to a shoplifting allegation in August 2023. A jury on Friday acquitted the officer, Connor Grubb, of criminal wrongdoing. Family lawyers say Young's sons “deserve to grow up in a world where pregnant Black women are not killed by police over shoplifting accusations.”
