Margot Robbie Shares How Her Neighbours Background Helped Her On Wuthering Heights
Margot Robbie has opened up about how her early days on Neighbours helped prepare her for one of her biggest movie roles to date.
The three-time Oscar nominee is currently gearing up for the release of her new film Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell, in which the Australian star is set to portray Cathy to Jacob Elordi’s Heathcliff.
During a recent interview with British Vogue, Margot reflected on the making of the Emily Brontë adaptation, including some of the difficulties she faced as both a producer and an actor on set.
One example she gave was a day when the weather refused to co-operate, culminating in Emerald “writing a whole new scene in 30 minutes, if that, just typed on an iPhone”.
British Vogue also named the “emotional weight of Cathy’s constant crying” as something Margot had to contend with, although the former Wolf Of Wall Street star observed that she had some great training for that in her soap days.
“I worked on a soap for three years, so it’s a muscle that I’ve built up,” she remarked.
Neighbours was one of Margot’s earliest acting roles, playing music lover Donna Freedman for 355 episodes between 2008 and 2011.
She later reprised the role of Donna in 2022, making a one-off appearance to commemorate Neighbours going off air alongside fellow alum like Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia, Delta Goodrem, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Jason Donovan.
Neighbours did briefly return to screens when it was acquired by Amazon’s Freevee network, but came to an end for the second time earlier this year.
Elsewhere in her interview with British Vogue, Margot also spoke for the first time about the backlash that both she and Jacob have faced in light of their casting in Wuthering Heights.
