Trump Sues BBC for $10 Billion Over Edited January 6 Speech
The US president Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC, alleging defamatory editing of his January 6, 2021 speech.
The US president Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC, alleging defamation over edited footage of his January 6, 2021 speech.
US president Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against Britain’s BBC, accusing the broadcaster of defamation and deceptive editing of one of his speeches related to January 6, 2021.
According to US media, including CBS News, the lawsuit was submitted on Monday to a federal court in southern Florida and includes claims of defamation and violations of Florida’s business practices law.
Trump’s legal team argues that the BBC’s Panorama documentary edited together two separate excerpts of his speech, aired a week before the US presidential election, in a way that falsely suggested he incited violence at the US Capitol.
The complaint states that the two clips were taken nearly an hour apart and that the BBC omitted remarks in which Trump urged supporters to act peacefully, calling the edit misleading and malicious.
Trump’s lawyers are seeking $5 billion in damages for each claim, saying the broadcast harmed his reputation and amounted to interference in the US electoral process.
The BBC has previously acknowledged an editorial error, apologising for what it described as a “judgment mistake” and confirming the program would not be rebroadcast in that form.
However, the broadcaster has maintained that there is no legal basis for a defamation claim, setting the stage for a high-profile court battle as Trump continues legal action against major media organisations.
