Sydney Hero Who Disarmed Terrorist Says He Would Act Again Despite Serious Injuries
Ahmed al Ahmed, who wrestled a gun from a terrorist during the Sydney attack, says he would act again, despite being seriously wounded and in danger.
Ahmed al Ahmed, a Syrian-born fruit seller in Sydney, disarmed one of the shooters during a deadly attack on Hanukkah celebrations, saving numerous lives despite being injured. He stated he would act the same way again if faced with a similar situation.
The attack, carried out by Sajid Akram, 50, Pakistani, and his son Navid, 24, on Sunday, left at least 15 dead and dozens wounded at Bondi Beach. Sajid Akram was killed by police, while Navid was hospitalized in critical condition.
A video of Ahmed confronting the gunman went viral on social media, earning him nationwide recognition. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited him in hospital, calling him “a true hero” whose bravery prevented further casualties.
Sydney Morning Herald reported that Ahmed suffered multiple injuries during the attack, and his lawyer warned that the pain could threaten the use of his hand. Despite this, Ahmed affirmed he has no regrets. Meanwhile, community fundraising efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support him.
Investigations revealed that the attackers had misled their families, claiming they were going fishing before carrying out the shooting. Police have released the names of several victims, including ten-year-old Matilda, a Holocaust survivor, a former police officer, a rabbi, and a French citizen.
Australian authorities have deployed 328 officers around places of worship in Sydney to prevent further attacks, and investigations continue into the shooters’ motives, sources of weapons, and any potential accomplices.
Religious leaders, including a Muslim educator previously linked by an old photograph to one of the attackers, have strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that targeting civilians is forbidden in Islam. Community leaders and politicians alike have praised Ahmed al Ahmed as a symbol of courage and humanity.
