On the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 17, the same day that their brother, Nick, appeared in court to face charges in their parents' murder, Jake and Romy Reiner released a joint statement (via TMZ). "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," the statement read. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

The statement continued: "We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."

Nick Reiner Appeared in Court Earlier Wednesday

Jake and Romy's statement was released just hours after Nick appeared in court to face charges in his parents' murder. Nick appeared only briefly in court, and his attorney, Alan Jackson, declined to enter a plea. Nick's arraignment was continued to Jan. 7, 2026.

Nick's arraignment comes after two days of increasing speculation about the horrific crimes. In a press release issued on Wednesday afternoon, Los Angeles D.A. Nathan Hochman revealed key details of the tragic episode. It's believed that Rob and Michele were killed at some point in the early hours of Sunday morning, and that Nick subsequently fled the residence. He checked into the Pierside Santa Monica hotel around 4 a.m., and later that morning, staff found his room saturated with blood. Romy, along with her roommate, discovered her father's body in her parents' bedroom around 3:30 p.m. the following afternoon. The Reiners' youngest child at first thought her father was the only victim, but she was later informed by a paramedic that her mother died, as well.

The murders occurred hours after an uncomfortable holiday party hosted by Conan O'Brien, where Nick arrived as a guest of his parents, who reportedly wanted to keep an eye on him as his behavior had become increasingly erratic of late. After asking several of the celebrity guests if they were famous, Nick reportedly got into a confrontation with former SNL star Bill Hader. Nick's "asocial" behavior led to "a very loud argument" between him and Rob, which sources say stopped the party cold. Immediately thereafter, a "mortified" Rob apologized to O'Brien before quickly leaving with Michele. Several hours later, Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their bedroom.
