Earlier this year, when Apple announced it would increase production in India, US President Trump said he told the Apple CEO not to do so. He wanted production brought back to the US. We can only guess what Apple will finally do (or has done). But, the incident underlines two trends that emerged four years back. One, global companies looking for an alternative to China for their manufacturing facilities; and two, seeking the alternative as close to home as possible, if not the home country itself. Four years down the line, there are some companies where things have moved. At others, plans are still on the drawing board.
