Man dies at McDonald’s drive-thru after getting trapped between car and counter
A fast food customer was killed in a ‘freak accident’ at a McDonald’s drive-thru.
The 69-year-old man, identified as Michael Dickinson, died after getting pinned between his vehicle and the drive-thru counter in the town of Grand Island in Nebraska, United States.
Police and firefighters rushed to the McDonald’s where they found him trapped between his vehicle and the drive-thru payment window.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott said it was ‘100% a freak accident’.
He explained: ‘It appears the deceased opened the door to further reach out the window for payment purposes.
‘We’re not sure if the vehicle lurched forward or what happened, but he got pinched between the door frame and the drive thru window counter.’
Mr Elliot said an employee tried to help the trapped customer by going through the passenger side of the vehicle.
But the McDonald’s worker injured himself in the rescue effort and was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he is expected to be okay.
Mr Dickinson was the only occupant of the vehicle when the accident occurred, police said.
The scene was cleared by officers just two hours alter and the drive-thru was open throughout the day.
The Grand Island Police Department is continuing its investigation into what happened.
A McDonald’s in the UK saw a customer die in a ‘medical emergency’ in the restaurant in November.
Paramedics found the man in a critical condition at the restaurant in Stafford on Monday evening after calls from concerned diners at 6.21pm.
Despite being put on advanced life support, he was pronounced dead at the scene later on.
The cause of the medical emergency remains unclear.
The incident sparked a huge emergency response, with eyewitnesses reporting several marked cars and two ambulances at the scene in Eccleshall Road.
