Liverpool team news v Wolves: Chiesa makes first PL start this season among 2 changes by Slot
Liverpool will round off a calendar year of extreme highs and lows this afternoon when they play Wolves in their final fixture of 2025.
It’s been a chastening season so far for both teams, but whereas the Reds have enjoyed a gradual resurgence over the past month, their opponents today have collected just two points all season and already look doomed to relegation, barring an extraordinary turnaround.
Rob Edwards’ side were agonisingly close to a shock draw away to league leaders Arsenal a fortnight ago, though, and Arne Slot goes into this match without the likes of Alexander Isak (injured), Dominik Szoboszlai (suspended) and Mo Salah (Africa Cup of Nations).
It therefore mightn’t be as comfortable an afternoon for Liverpool as what many might think, but the Premier League champions will very much expect to maintain their winning run with the starting XI that the Dutch tactician has selected to take on Wolves.
Liverpool starting XI to face Wolves
Slot makes just two changes from the Liverpool side which began the victory against Spurs.
Alisson Becker is between the sticks as usual, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate the centre-back pairing. There’s one change at right-back as Jeremie Frimpong comes in for Conor Bradley, who’s held in reserve after tweaking his hamstring last weekend.
Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister all keep their places in midfield, with Florian Wirtz set to play on the left flank while Hugo Ekitike leads the line. On the right, Federico Chiesa starts a Premier League match for the first time this season, in the absences of Salah, Isak and Szoboszlai.
Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson are standout names on a very youthful subs’ bench which includes Rio Ngumoha, Wellity Lucky, Trey Nyoni and Calvin Ramsay.
