Perfect Waves In Poland? Yep, This Video Will Blow Your Mind
The Baltic Sea is not on every surfer's bucket list, not even close. Yes, you can surf it just like you can surf in the Great Lakes--there are waves but not exactly what you're looking for because they're typically frigid, mushy, and fickle.
But, as they say, every dog can have its day and in Poland's case, that day was yesterday. Perfect, hollow left-hand tubes were reeling for no one except the random passerby and photographer Krzysztof Jędrzejak aka @baltic_surf_scapes who captured this incredibly rare window of perfection along the Polish coast.
Krzysztof said, "“Yesterday was the first proper storm this autumn and winter. Charts were looking insane like 6 meters at 12 seconds in the middle of the Baltic. I haven’t seen such solid swell incoming to Polish coast for years."
Although its not a popular surf destination, there certainly are surfers who call the Baltic region home and, given the circumstances, they're some of the most surf-stoked humans on Earth--they'll take whatever they can get. So, why aren't any of them out there getting shacked / pitted / slotted / or absolutely toob'd?
Well, that comes down to the current which, according to Krzysztof, is totally unmanageable without a jet ski. “Waves were rolling for such long distance big and open enough to have a ride of your life in the Baltic. Unfortunately that’s the place with the strongest current I’ve ever witnessed. It can get to the middle of the bay. There’s no chance to position yourself on the peak without the jet ski.”
Dylan Graves took a trip to the Baltic Sea last year to link up with Swedish pro Freddie Meadows, who's no stranger to scoring the nooks and crannies of his motherland, for an episode of Weird Waves (see below).
Who knows, maybe someday a couple of surfers will score Skeleton Bay-like conditions in the Baltic Sea but, until then, the old saying will hold true, "You (and a jet ski) should have been here yesterday."
