U.S.-Led Forces Kill or Detain Nearly 25 ISIS Fighters in Syria, CENTCOM Says
U.S. Central Command said American forces and partners killed or detained nearly 25 ISIS fighters in Syria following multiple raids launched after a December 19 attack.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces and their partners killed or detained nearly 25 Islamic State fighters in Syria following a large-scale operation launched on December 19. The missions were carried out across multiple regions of the country.
CENTCOM stated on Tuesday, December 30 that at least seven ISIS members were killed during 11 operations conducted between December 20 and 29, while others were arrested. The raids also resulted in the destruction of four ISIS weapons caches.
The operations followed a deadly shooting near the Syrian city of Palmyra that killed a Syrian security officer, two U.S. soldiers, and an American interpreter, wounding three others. After the attack, U.S. President Donald Trump warned of “very serious retaliation.”
CENTCOM said the raids were part of Operation “Strike Falcon,” launched on December 19, during which U.S. and Jordanian forces struck more than 70 ISIS targets using over 100 precision-guided munitions.
The December 19 offensive involved dozens of fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery units, targeting ISIS infrastructure and weapons facilities in central Syria. U.S. officials say the operation significantly degraded the group’s operational capacity.
Despite losing its territorial stronghold in 2019, ISIS continues to operate sleeper cells in Syria and Iraq, carrying out ambushes and inspiring attacks abroad, according to Western intelligence agencies.
CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said U.S. forces would not relent in pursuing ISIS, stressing close coordination with regional partners to eliminate threats to U.S. and regional security.
CENTCOM also warned that ISIS-inspired plots have targeted U.S. interests at least 11 times in 2025, adding that joint operations over the past year have led to more than 300 arrests and the killing of over 20 militants, underscoring continued pressure on the group.
