Kazakhstan Exports 260,000 Tons of Wheat to Afghanistan

Kazakhstan has exported 260,000 tons of wheat to Afghanistan, marking a significant increase in regional trade amid ongoing supply and border challenges.

Kazakhstan has significantly increased its wheat exports to Afghanistan, with shipments rising 36.8 percent from 190,000 tons to 260,000 tons between September and December 19, 2025. Officials say Afghanistan remains a key transit route for the country’s grain exports.

Overall, Kazakhstan exported 3.9 million tons of grain during the period, up from 3.4 million tons the previous year. Exports to Uzbekistan also rose by 35 percent, while shipments to Kyrgyzstan more than doubled, reflecting strong regional demand.

Kazakh Agriculture Minister Aidarbek Saparov stated that Kazakhstan’s total grain export capacity is around 13 million tons, with the surplus helping stabilize domestic prices. The country currently exports grain to 45 nations worldwide.

The growth in regional grain trade underscores Kazakhstan’s role in ensuring food security in neighboring countries, particularly Afghanistan, which relies heavily on imported staples.

The trade increase comes amid ongoing tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban, which have escalated border controls. Over 10,000 trucks carrying Afghanistan and Pakistan’s goods remain stranded in Karachi due to the closure of border crossings for more than two months.

Traders seeking to export goods to Central Asian states face daily losses amounting to millions of dollars, highlighting the economic impact of stalled regional trade.

These developments threaten to disrupt food and commodity flows across the region, affecting both Afghanistan importers and Central Asian markets dependent on cross-border trade.

Analysts warn that sustained border closures and strained diplomatic relations could jeopardize regional stability, emphasizing the need for coordinated policies to maintain supply chains and economic activity.
