Thomas Frank reveals why his past experience says Tottenham will be competitive soon
Thomas Frank remains confident that he is the right man to turn things around and make Tottenham competitive in all competitions.
The Premier League table is not a pretty sight for Spurs fans at the turn of the new year, with the Lilywhites a long way off the European places.
Some experts feel Thomas Frank has to guide Tottenham to a top-six finish to keep his job, and that is now looking increasingly unlikely.
Reports suggest Spurs are already looking at potential Frank replacements, but the 52-year-old does not seem too worried about losing his job.
Thomas Frank says Tottenham situation is not unusual to him
The Spurs head coach has now pointed out that he had a difficult start at his previous two clubs but managed to turn things around.
He is confident that it will be the same case at Tottenham Hotspur, asserting that the Lilywhites will be competitive sooner rather than later.
When asked about the pressure he is coming under, Frank told Football.London: “It’s normal. It’s not the first time in my career I haven’t found the team instantly clicks, but it’s coming over time. I know it will come, probably sooner rather than later.
“At Brondby, I didn’t win the first eight games, and then we were unbeaten in nine. At Brentford, we lost eight out of 10 games and then were unbeaten in 10. So I am convinced we will see a similar pattern here. I’m not in doubt about that, because I know how to make a competitive team.
“We will make a very competitive team here as well. I’m in no doubt of that. To make it even more complex, here is the amount of games we are playing, with rotation and physical load and mental load that just impact a team, especially if it’s not used to doing that week in, week out.”
Frank admits Spurs are struggling to shake off losing habit
The Dane is conscious that he is taking over a team which finished in 17th place and that losing had become a habit to the squad even before he walked through the door.
He suggested that having to contend with Champions League football is also proving difficult for a squad which is not used to playing big matches every few days.
Frank added: “I definitely think there are habits that can go both ways. There are good habits and bad habits, and, of course winning is a good habit and losing is a bad habit, but underneath that is the habit of every staff member, every player.
“How you react when there are setbacks in games is something we are really working very, very hard on. That’s something I also think we have dealt ok with. For example, the Brighton away game maybe the year before we would have lost, but we came back and got a 2-2 draw. That was a good example as was Bodo away.
“So there are bits that are going the right way, but we are not consistent enough to do that every third or fourth day. No matter how much I hate saying it, that’s an ongoing thing we need to work on. Small bits and good habits for every player.”
