Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his annual New Year address, reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to the reunification of China and Taiwan, emphasizing it as unstoppable.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his annual New Year’s address in Beijing, promised that reunification with Taiwan is “unstoppable,” emphasizing Beijing’s long-term goal of territorial integration. Xi also highlighted China’s engagement with the global community, citing several multilateral conferences hosted in the capital this year, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.

State media broadcasted Xi’s speech alongside footage of China’s largest military parade in decades, held in September to mark the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end. World leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, attended, forming what analysts have called a “geopolitical axis of transformation.”

In a clear signal to Taiwan, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted live-fire military exercises near the island on Monday and Tuesday. These drills, named “Justice Mission 2025,” involved the Navy, Air Force, missile units, and coast guard, and included at least 89 warplanes, more than any PLA drill in over a year.

China maintains that Taiwan is a part of its territory and refuses to recognize its self-governance, consistently challenging Taipei’s diplomatic space internationally.

Taiwan’s government has condemned the military drills as provocations, emphasizing that such actions destabilize regional security and threaten the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

Xi Jinping’s speech and the PLA exercises come amid growing tensions in East Asia, with analysts noting that China is signaling both domestic resolve and international strength. The displays also aim to assert China’s influence ahead of the 2025 National People’s Congress and other key political milestones.

The drills, conducted unusually close to Taiwan, are seen as part of Beijing’s broader strategy to pressure the island while deterring foreign intervention in cross-strait matters. Taiwan has increased its air and naval patrols in response, preparing for potential escalation.

Observers warn that the combination of political rhetoric and large-scale military exercises may heighten the risk of miscalculations in the Taiwan Strait, impacting regional trade and security.

The international community continues to monitor China-Taiwan relations closely, urging restraint and dialogue to prevent conflict while addressing complex sovereignty and security issues in the region.
