Six firefighters are in hospital following a collision between two fire engines in central London.

The firefighters are being treated for broken bones and injuries to the chest and head after the vehicles collided with each other in Islington.

Two fire engines, operated by the London Fire Brigade, collided at the junction of Farringdon Road and Clerkenwell Road on Saturday evening, prompting police and ambulance services to rush to the scene.

Pictures from the crash reveal broken wind screens, while the roof of one of the vehicles caved in from the impact of the collision.

The impact also caused damage to traffic lights and street furniture after a fire engine from Lambeth and a turntable ladder appliance from Soho collided.

Surrounding roads were closed to traffic as police officers and ambulance crews treated the injured.

The collision happened at around 10.17pm on Saturday and was cleared by 3.45am on Sunday.
