Watch: Phillies play-by-play announcer Tom McCarthy calls Myles Garrett’s record-breaking sack
Phillies television play-by-play broadcaster Tom McCarthy was in the booth for a big moment in NFL history.
McCarthy on Sunday called Myles Garrett’s record-breaking 23rd sack, a new NFL single-season record. The Cleveland Browns defensive end surpassed T.J. Watt and Michael Strahan’s record of 22 ½ sacks in the fourth quarter with a sack against Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow.
Under pressure and he’s sacked. And there it is. A record that has stood nearly a quarter of a century has a new leader as 30-year-old Myles Garrett records his NFL record 23rd sack of the year.
McCarthy is one of the busiest announcers in sports. Along with his duties as Phillies lead television play-by-play man, McCarthy calls NFL games and NCAA men’s basketball games on television for CBS and NFL games on radio for Westwood One. McCarthy also called a few national baseball games this year for TBS.
As his national profile grows, it’s great to hear McCarthy get the opportunity to make one of the biggest calls of his career.
