Gassing up local history
The Saratoga Historical Foundation is presenting a lecture about the history of gas stations at the Saratoga Foothill Club on Jan. 19.
The foundation will host Bruce C. Cumming and Nicholas Veronico, co-authors of “Lost Gas Stations of San Mateo County.” They will be speaking about the multifaceted uses of service stations from 1911 to the present. In the past, these gas stations doubled as grocery stores and provided S & H green stamps and full auto service, like washing windows and checking motor oil and tire pressure.
The lecture is free. Cumming and Veronico spent two years researching and collecting information and photographs for their book, which will be available for purchase at the event. Cumming had a 42-year career in California law enforcement, previously serving as police chief of Menlo Park and Morgan Hill. Cumming is an automotive enthusiast who owns several vintage cars and collects petroleum memorabilia. Veronico has written or contributed to over 45 books on art history, aviation, the military and transportation.
The lecture is scheduled for 3 p.m. at 20399 Park Place, Saratoga.
