Diplo Nearly ‘Attacked by Shark’ Swimming in Florida (Video)
Diplo (aka Thomas Wesley Pentz) has steadily made his way to superstardom in various realms: from electronic dance music, to producing pop music mega-hits, to a popular run club, to thirst-trap social media posts, to dropping acid on CNN’s New Year’s Eve special.
The 47-year-old is one of the biggest names in music, whether it’s behind the scenes producing, or behind the decks at live events. And it turns out, he surfs, too.
Although, his surfing career is much like other celebrities – mostly boat wakes and wave pools (most notably, Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch; more and that later). And recently, sans surfboard, the DJ went for a dip in Miami and he was joined, unknowingly, by a shark.
The footage was captured by wildlife drone operator El Dini, who claimed the shark to be a black tip. As for Diplo, he saw the clip as well. At the time, he just thought it was a paparazzi, capturing him as he went for a quick swim. Reposting the clip, he wrote:
“Was on the beach and thought this drone was some weird paparazzi person..just saw this post im tagged in and now I realize he just wanted to see me get attacked by a shark.”
The clip is geotagged at Faena, a luxyury hotel in Miami, where the price for a room will set you back about $1,000 a night. It’s a high-rise, right on the shore.
Florida, as is well-documented is one of the sharkiest places in the world. Per the latest report from the International Shark Attack File:
“Florida has long topped global charts for the number of shark bites, and 2024 was no different. Florida’s 14 cases represent 50% of the U.S. total and 30% of unprovoked bites worldwide.”
When it comes to Diplo’s surfing career, as previously mentioned and like a lot of his fellow celebrities, he typically sticks to shark-free, non-ocean waves – i.e. boat wakes and wave pools. Here he is a few years back at Surf Ranch:
