Netflix Announces the End of a Beloved Show This Year
Netflix has become the most popular streaming service in the world thanks in large part to its massive library of original shows, movies, documentaries, and specials. However, one of those beloved shows will be coming to an end in 2026.
Throughout 2025, Netflix canceled a total of 11 shows, but the streaming giant is expecting to bring a few beloved series to a more natural end this year. This week, Netflix confirmed one of those shows that will be ending in 2026: The Witcher.
What is 'The Witcher'?
Based on the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and following the popular series of video games, The Witcher focuses on protagonist Geralt of Rivia, a genetically enhanced monster hunter known as a “witcher” with superhuman abilities. Eventually, Geralt becomes the protector of Crown Princess Cirilla of Cintra, which becomes the central plot point of the series.
The show has been quite popular on Netflix since it began streaming at the end of 2019, and has been well-received by critics, with the second season even earning a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it appears that the beloved show is coming to a close this year.
Netflix Confirms the End
While it's long been expected that The Witcher would end with the upcoming fifth season of the show, Netflix officially confirmed that the show will indeed end in 2026.
This week, Netflix published an extensive list of what is coming to the platform in 2026. In that list, the streaming giant confirmed that the fifth and final season of The Witcher will come at some point in 2026.
"The time of the end is nigh: dark forces are aligning all across the Continent with villainous designs on Ciri. Even if Geralt and Yennefer can save their daughter and fulfill their last wish of reuniting as a family, they’ll have to face obstacles — and enemies — the likes of which they’ve never faced before," Netflix wrote in an article on Tudum.
Obviously, fans of the show will be sad to see it come to a close, but they will be grateful that the show will have a real, written conclusion as opposed to the many shows that have been unceremoniously canceled by Netflix over the past few years.
In addition to The Witcher, several more Netflix originals are set to end in 2026, including one of the most-watched shows in the platform's history.
