27 Archaeological Sites Discovered in Logar, Afghanistan

27 new archaeological sites have been discovered across multiple districts in Logar province, Afghanistan, officials said, highlighting the region’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Culture has announced the discovery of 27 new archaeological and historical sites in Logar province, according to an official statement released on Saturday. The ministry said the sites are located across the districts of Baraki Barak, Charkh, Kharwar, Azra, and the provincial capital Pul-e Alam.

The statement claims that the sites date back to the Bactrian–Gandhara and Islamic periods, and that they have now been officially registered in the national database of archaeological locations. Officials also said that surveys and preliminary documentation of the areas are underway.

In recent months, the Taliban administration has highlighted other discoveries, including a Buddhist-era statue found in Kapisa province, underscoring the historical richness of Afghanistan’s landscape, according to the reports. Archaeologists note that such discoveries could provide insight into the country’s ancient trade routes and cultural exchanges across Central and South Asia.

Afghanistan has long been a cradle of civilizations, with relics from the Achaemenid, Greek, Kushan, Buddhist, and Islamic periods. Its cultural heritage, including ancient Buddhist monasteries and Islamic monuments, has attracted international scholars for decades.

Despite its rich history, Afghanistan’s heritage sites have faced significant threats from decades of war, looting, and illicit antiquities trafficking. UNESCO and other international bodies have repeatedly called for better protection and documentation of these treasures.

The Taliban government claims that the new discoveries will be preserved and monitored under state supervision. However, the group has previously faced accusations of damaging cultural heritage and allowing illegal trade in antiquities, raising concerns among international heritage organizations.

Some experts caution that while the announcement highlights the archaeological wealth of Afghanistan, transparency, independent verification, and proper conservation methods are essential to ensure the sites are protected for future generations.
