Authorities have taken a person into custody after a fire heavily damaged a historic synagogue in Mississippi. No congregants were injured. The blaze erupted early Saturday at the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson. Authorities believe it was an act of arson. Photos showed the charred remains of an administrative office and synagogue library. Several Torahs were destroyed or damaged. The synagogue, the largest in Mississippi, was previously bombed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1967. Both the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation.
