Young Doctor Killed in Armed Robbery in Kabul, Residents Cite Rising Crime
A young doctor was killed by armed robbers in Kabul, residents said, underscoring growing concerns over rising violent crime despite official security assurances.
Local sources said a young doctor was shot dead by armed robbers in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, highlighting growing security concerns in the city.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 11, when the victim, identified as Dr. Syed Ilyas, was attacked at around 8 p.m., according to local residents.
Sources said the shooting took place outside Qasr-e-Salman Hotel in Kabul’s fifth security district, an area that has witnessed several criminal incidents in recent months.
Dr. Syed Ilyas was returning home when armed assailants intercepted him and opened fire, killing him at the scene, the sources added.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Taliban authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the killing.
Despite repeated claims by the Taliban that security has improved nationwide, residents of Kabul report a noticeable rise in violent crime, including armed robberies, targeted killings, and nighttime attacks.
Medical workers, traders, and ordinary civilians have increasingly become targets, with locals saying criminals often operate with little fear of arrest, especially after dark.
The killing of the young doctor has renewed public fear and anger, raising fresh questions over law enforcement effectiveness and the Taliban’s ability to curb escalating urban violence in Kabul.
