Netflix Changes Its Mind on Award-Winning Show With 97% Rotten Tomatoes Rating

While Netflix has several long-running original series on the massive streaming platform, the streaming giant regularly rolls out limited series, as well, which are explicitly designed to end after one season. However, depending on the popularity of the show, that is not always the plan.

Over the years, there have been several high-profile examples of shows across Netflix and many other streaming platforms that were originally intended to be limited series, spanning just one season, but went on be renewed for subsequent seasons, like Beef, The Watcher, Big Little Lies, Westworld, and The White Lotus.

Now, one Netflix series is following a similar path.

'Adolescence' Was a Hit

Back in March of 2025, Netflix released Adolescence, a four-part drama about a teenage boy who gets arrested after the murder of a girl from his school. The show explores what really happened, why, and the impact that everything has on the family.

The show was incredibly well-received by both general audiences and critics. It became Netflix’s second most-watched English-language series of all time, behind only the first season of Wednesday. It also got great reviews, earning an eye-popping 97% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The show also won a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or TV Film.

The show was always planned to be a limited series, ending after the first season. However, it sounds like Netflix has changed its mind after the show's success.

Another Season in the Works

While Adolescence was initially supposed to end after just one season, it sounds like the show's creators are already planning another season.

During an interview backstage at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, co-creator and star Stephen Graham confirmed that there are talks about a follow-up series, but it does not sound like it will be coming for a few years.

“I cannot answer that question because it’s somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind and Jack’s mind, and we’ll pull it out in three or four years, so stay tuned,” Graham said via Deadline.

Deadline previously reported that a second season was a possibility back in April, with Plan B co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner telling the outlet that they were having conversations about the “next iteration” of the show.

While she did not wish to reveal too much, Gardner said they were discussing how a second season of the hit show could “widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive.”
