Dad Thinks Bride Is Acting 'Self Centered' After Her Response to 'Distraught' Mom Having to Miss Her Wedding

A father of the bride is seeking advice online and wants to know if his daughter is being “self-centered” ahead of her big day.

Taking to Reddit’s popular “Am I the A——-” forum, the man explained that his 28-year-old daughter’s wedding was looming.

What was supposed to be a happy day became more complicated after his wife received heartbreaking news that meant she might have to miss her daughter’s wedding.

In his post, the Redditor revealed that his “frail” father-in-law had been hospitalized, and there were concerns that he dying.

“My wife has been distraught and she made the decision to go fly down,” he wrote, adding that his wife’s sister was already down with their dad and had already decided not to attend the wedding.

Continuing, he wrote, “It was tough decision because she will miss the wedding. I told her I will FaceTime her in for the ceremony and anything else but to go be with her dad before he dies.”

He pointed out that attending the wedding would make her “miserable,” saying that she’d struggle “to put on a happy face and pretend everything was okay.”

However, his daughter was upset about the decision. He said that she “called her mom a lot of names,” reducing his wife to tears. During a phone call, he told the bride-to-be that she was “being self centered and cruel” about the situation.

“I didn’t raise her to not have any empathy,” he said, adding that he told her to apologize.

Saying that his wife was “distraught,” he posed a question: “Are we in the wrong… my daughter 100% thinks we are in the wrong.”

Fellow Redditors rushed to the comments section to commiserate over the complicated situation.

“This is a difficult situation all around,” one user wrote, urging the man to attend his daughter’s big day and join his wife afterwards, saying “as a parent, it’s important that you show up.”

They also stressed that the parents of the bride were not in the wrong.

“I would clarify for your daughter that she is right, that it isn’t fair. It’s not fair for her whose mom is going to miss her wedding, and that sucks. It’s not fair to grandpa, it’s not like he chose this moment to be dying, and that sucks,” another user wrote. “It’s not fair to your wife who was so happy and excited to see her daughter get married but now instead of that happiness she plans to be grieving her father, and that sucks.”

Concluding, they added, “It is unfair, but that doesn’t mean anybody is at fault. Sometimes the universe is just unfair.”

Recognizing that the man’s wife was “stuck between a rock and a hard place,” one user pointed out that the bride might seem “irrational and mean.” However, they opined that it wasn’t necessarily fair to think she was being self centered.

“This is not an [Am I the A-----] situation, in my opinion – it’s an ‘am I making the right decision as a parent (and daughter)’ situation,” someone wrote.

They explained: “For the record, I think your wife is making the wrong call, and that she will regret missing her daughter’s wedding. I say that as someone who has an ill, aging father who has had several close calls since a severe stroke 6 months ago. And I bet that if your wife’s dad were cognizant/with it enough to express his feelings, he would tell her to go to her daughter’s wedding.”

“She can go to the wedding and fly out immediately after. My dad would be so upset if he realized I missed my child’s wedding to be at the hospital with him – yes, even if he was potentially on the brink of passing,” they continued. “Hell, when the stroke happened, his last cognizant thought before it took him was to tell my mom not to tell me until our family got home from the vacation we were on.”

Another user put themselves in the bride’s shoes, writing, “I would personally would want my parent to say goodbye to their parent and wouldn’t give a flying f— if they missed my wedding because their parent died.”
