French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe will not bow to bullies, rejecting tariff threats and defending sovereignty amid escalating tensions over Greenland.
French President Emmanuel Macron sharply criticized US President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying Europe would not submit to pressure or bullying.
He said Europe prefers respect over coercion and the rule of law over force, stressing that intimidation has no place in international relations.
Macron’s comments followed Trump’s threat to impose heavy tariffs on European countries if they oppose US control over Greenland.
While some European leaders have adopted a more cautious tone toward Trump’s remarks, Macron has taken a notably tougher and more confrontational stance.
He said European countries would not accept the “law of the strongest” and would refuse to become dependent protectorates of any power.
Tensions over Greenland have intensified as the autonomous Danish territory gains strategic importance due to its location, resources, and growing Arctic competition.
Trade disputes have also escalated across the Atlantic in recent years, with tariffs increasingly used as political leverage rather than economic tools.
Macron said Europe would continue defending territorial integrity and sovereignty, even as global politics moves toward greater disorder and uncertainty.
He warned that new US tariffs would be fundamentally unacceptable and could trigger a strong European Union response, including tough trade countermeasures.
