Planned Parenthood is Doing More Vasectomies With States Banning Abortions
As states enact bans on abortion following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, Planned Parenthood is expanding its vasectomy sales, citing a surge in demand for permanent birth control options nationwide.
Planned Parenthood of Michigan has resumed offering vasectomies at its Irwin/Martin health center in Grand Rapids, with plans to expand to other locations this year. The move comes after the pro-abortion organization halted the service about a decade ago, but officials say renewed interest spiked after the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which shifted abortion to the states.
“The demand is real and present,” said Dr. Kate Starr, chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood of Michigan. “Patients and their partners are looking for ways to control their lives and their families, and vasectomy is one of the ways in which they can do that.”

From a pro-life viewpoint, the trend underscores how limiting abortions encourages alternatives that prevent unintended pregnancies without ending lives.
Nationally, vasectomies surged 1,200% at Planned Parenthood health centers the day after Donald Trump’s election victory in 2024, according to Alexis McGill Johnson, the abortion organization’s president and CEO.
“Just the day after the election, we saw at Planned Parenthood health centers, a 1,200 percent increase in vasectomies for men,” Johnson said.
Pro-life advocates see the spike as a potential silver lining, suggesting that political shifts toward life-affirming policies may reduce the number of abortions.
In Michigan, vasectomies are available to adults 21 and older for $800 without insurance, including a $100 consultation fee, and are covered by many health plans. The procedure takes less than an hour, requires no general anesthesia and involves two appointments.
“There are patients in the state of Michigan whose only option has been being on a long wait list for a hospital-based procedure six to eight months from now,” Starr said. “We are offering access to folks who want vasectomy and also likely need reasonably priced care.”
A 2024 KFF survey found that about 1 in 10 adult men in America have undergone sterilization like vasectomy. In one Michigan health system, vasectomy consultations rose 150% and procedures increased 160% in the six months after Dobbs.
