Sports Briefs: Gray sets pace as Branson knocks off Redwood
NJ Gray scored a game-high 24 points as the Branson School rolled out a 52-49 victory to hand rival Redwood High its first league loss on Tuesday at College of Marin.
Luke Vilhauer had 10 rebounds for Branson. The win was the first for the Bulls (9-11, 3-1) over Redwood since the 2024 MCAL boys basketball championship game. Jake Post led the Giants (7-11, 3-1) with 22 points in a closely-contested matchup.
- Wes Harrison scored a team-high 19 points as Terra Linda used a big third-quarter run to surge past Novato 69-50 on Tuesday. Kaden Martin scored 11 points for TL (10-8, 1-3), which blew open the game with a 24-6 run in the third quarter. Shauwn Sharpe and Logan Walters each scored 10 for TL. Novato (0-20, 0-3) was led by Chris Toussaint with 23 points. Anthony Hernandez had eight points and nine rebounds for the Hornets, who got seven points each from Gabe Rimbaud and Robert Deleon.
- Tam High rallied from a 20-point deficit to beat San Marin, 77-74, in an MCAL thriller on Tuesday. Arman Saluki led the Red-tailed Hawks (12-9, 3-1) with 27 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter. Henry Bennett added 11 points for the Hawks, who got 10 from Felix Jacobs. James Barbash stepped up with seven points and seven rebounds in the second half rally. San Marin (11-10, 1-3) has a non-league date with Justin-Siena on Friday, then faces Redwood on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Girls basketball
Abby Bartholo scored a team-high 17 points to lead San Marin to a 63-25 victory over Tam High on Tuesday. Addy Timmel added 13 points, while Delaney Butler, Eleanna Schram and Norah Bentaleb had six points each. Megan McCune had seven points for San Marin (14-6, 4-0), which hosts the MB15 Showcase on Saturday, with seven games featuring Marin County teams against North Bay squads.
- Novato posted a 38-18 victory over Terra Linda on Tuesday to post back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Savannah Sparks led the Hornets iwth 12 points, while Biana Toussaint had a career-high nine points. The Hornets (7-12, 2-1) beat Tam on Friday behind a 23-point effort from Sparks, as well as 11 points from Seanna Madsen and seven from Nabilah Nijem.
Girls soccer
Ava McMahon scored the game’s only goal as Tam hit the road for a 1-0 victory against Marin Catholic on Tuesday night. Lauren Willard had the assist on Tam’s 18th-minute goal but the play was set up by Mia Yolles.
- Lila Campbell led the defense for Tam (4-7-4, 2-0-1), which hasn’t lost in seven games and has only conceded twice during that span. Tam coach Dave Presher also highlighted the performance of goalie Fionnula Hall.
- MC had a huge chance to equalize in the final 10 minutes following a dangerous cross sent into the box by Claire Hunnewell. Tam almost made it 2-0 moments later on a breakaway but Juliana Sokolov came up with the save to keep the Wildcats (3-5-3, 2-1-1) in the game.
