Full list of Poundland closures after firm says it still has ‘much to do’

Poundland still has ‘much to do’ to turn its fortunes around after closing nearly 150 stores and axing 2,200 staff, its boss has said.

The discount retailer pressed ahead with its major overhaul after getting the green light from the High Court last year to shrink its store portfolio to 651 from 800.

It also closed two of its four UK warehouses, in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston in the West Midlands as part of the restructuring plan.

The chain announced on Friday that its cost-cutting initiatives were now complete.

It said in a statement: ‘Any future closures will be a consequence of standard business-as-usual lease events expected at a retailer with a large store network.’

The discounter was sold to the Gordon Brothers last June for a sum of £1.

In August the group was on the brink of administration when it got approval to carry out a major restructuring of the business amid warnings it was running out of cash.

Efforts to salvage the company have also included refining its offer, stripping ranges including frozen foods.

The chain has also reverted to a simpler price structure, with 60 per cent of grocery goods now £1, and the rest either £2 or £3.

From next week Poundland is relaunching its in-house line Pep&Co clothing, with 90 per cent of items set to be priced at £10 or less. 

Its managing director Barry Williams said: ‘While there’s been significant progress as we refocus and re-energise the business with lower prices and a sharper offer, we know we still have much to do.

‘Our focus on our costs has, without doubt, given us a platform for future growth, but no sustainable turnaround can be based on cost management alone.

‘That’s why our focus in 2026 will be on delivering the kind of ranges and price simplicity our customers want right across the store – in clothing, homewares, as well as our core grocery aisles.’

Poundland is just one of several brands to have slashed its high street presence.

WHSmith, Wilko, Claire’s, Morrisons, Homebase, New Look, Select, Dobbies Garden Centre, Bodycare and Hobby Craft, NatWest and Santander have all axed stores in the past year.
