Colorado Skiers Get a Break as a Powerful Storm Dumps Fresh Powder

It’s been a largely snowless, dry season for ski resorts across Colorado, spoiling many skiers’ hopes for powder turns and faceshots.

But this weekend, at least, it’s feeling like winter in the Centennial State again, as a powerful storm moves across the U.S., depositing snow in cities from Texas to New York. In Colorado, the inches at popular ski resorts have tallied up fast.

Aspen Mountain, for instance, started the day with six inches of new snow according to its snow report (per its webcams, that total seems to have grown by another six inches). The resort also shared photos of skiers taking a much-needed trip to the white room.

Further south, at Purgatory Resort, a foot of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. That’s allowed the ski resort to make plans for opening more terrain.

“Insert sigh of relief here,” Purgatory wrote in a recent social media post, nodding to the months of mostly inactive weather.

Other mountains, from Arapahoe Basin to Keystone Resort, also took to social media, showing off their snowy bounties. 

While it is delighting local skiers, the storm, at the same time, appears to be a logistical challenge for the organizers of the X Games.

The action sports competition is underway in Aspen this weekend, and amid all the snow, organizers have announced a few weather postponements, including one for the women’s Big Air event. Fresh flakes can make it hard for competitors to get the needed speed for their jumps.

It also won’t be a long-winded storm. Only a bit more snow is expected in Colorado through the end of the month, according to meteorologist Chris Tomer, who provides skiers with daily weather updates on his YouTube channel. 

For now, though, there’s powder to be skied and enjoyed.
