Thomas Frank says Tottenham star has a high ceiling but he is out of contract in 2026
Thomas Frank has spoken about what Yves Bissouma can contribute to Tottenham and shed light on his relationship with the midfielder.
Bissouma made his first start of the season in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Burnley after coming as a substitute for his first appearance of the season against West Ham last week.
The Mali international appears to have forced his way into Thomas Frank’s plans due to the Lilywhites’ injuries in the middle of the park.
Leading up to the January window, it had been widely reported that Tottenham had decided to cash in on Bissouma, but the 29-year-old’s Spurs career has now been handed a lifeline.
Thomas Frank insists Yves Bissouma was not frozen out at Tottenham
Bissouma was left out of Tottenham’s Super Cup squad against PSG due to disciplinary issues, and last month, the Spurs midfielder was allegedly caught inhaling nitrous oxide.
Many assumed that would be the end of the former Brighton man’s Tottenham career, but Frank insists that the midfielder was never punished, and his absence was down to injury.
When asked if his relationship with Bissouma had improved, the Tottenham boss told Football.London ahead of the club’s clash against the Clarets: “That [relationship] has been fine along the way. He’s been pretty unlucky with injuries, more or less throughout the season. So now he’s back, trained very well. I think he had a good impact when he came on the pitch against West Ham. So I’d say fine.
“No [he wasn’t being punished], that was clear injuries. He made a mistake, that was a consequence of that. Then he got injured literally two days later in training. That’s why he was out of the squad.”
Frank claims Bissouma has a ‘top ceiling’
The 52-year-old started alongside Conor Gallagher in the middle of the park at Turf Moore and played 78 minutes before being replaced by Archie Gray.
Frank believes that Bissouma brings a lot of strong qualities to the Tottenham midfield, but challenged the 29-year-old to add consistency to his game.
He added: “Bissouma has a great top ceiling. I think his qualities we can all see, on the ball, really wanting the ball, constantly seeking it, looking forward, driving forward. Very good technical abilities. Physical stature. He’s a strong player. The best players, they can consistently perform, day in, day out, years over years. So that’s what he needs to find.”
