Tottenham’s midfield plans for the remainder of the winter window appear to be shifting, with one target no longer as prominent.
Tottenham Hotspur fans will no doubt be eager to see a few more players arrive in north London, given their side’s struggles so far this season.
Injuries have not helped Spurs’ case, with players dropping like flies, and when added to a poor run of results that has Tottenham sitting 14th with just two wins in their last 14 outings, strengthening the squad appears a clear priority.
However, with just two days left before the winter window slams shut, Tottenham are left with only two signings following the arrivals of Conor Gallagher and Souza.
Tottenham interest cools in Curtis Jones as Inter Milan enter race
Regardless, Spurs continue to be linked with new additions, and it was reported that Tottenham were considering adding another midfielder to their squad before the deadline.
Curtis Jones has been a name on the radar of the Lilywhites, with Spurs having explored a move for the Liverpool midfielder, who is believed to be open to a move away from Anfield in search of more gametime.
Fabrizio Romano has now shared an update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Jones, revealing that while Spurs were initially aggressive in their interest, that approach has cooled following the £35m signing of Gallagher, with Inter Milan now keen on the Liverpool player.
Spurs must reassess midfield priorities late in window
There will inevitably be questions about whether Jones is the right profile for Tottenham at this stage.
It makes sense for the club to have cooled their interest in the Liverpool midfielder, given he is of a similar mould to Gallagher as a box-to-box option and powerful runner from deep.
Spurs should instead be looking to add a midfield controller, in the mould of Adam Wharton, rather than piling up players of the same profile.
It is understood that Tottenham have reignited their interest in Wharton, although it remains unlikely the Palace man will be on the move this winter window.
