Australia sanctions 20 Iranians, three entities over protest crackdown

Australia has imposed new sanctions on 20 Iranian individuals and three entities in response to the violent suppression of protests in Iran, the foreign ministry announced Tuesday.

Canberra said the sanctions target senior officials and organizations linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard accused of involvement in domestic repression and threats against individuals inside and outside Iran.

The move expands Australia’s broader sanctions framework against Iran and follows earlier decisions aimed at increasing pressure over human rights abuses and regional destabilization activities.

Officials said the action demonstrates Australia’s commitment to stand with the Iranian people alongside international partners confronting what it called ongoing repression by Iranian authorities.

Australia has already sanctioned more than 200 Iranian individuals and entities, including over 100 linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, under various restrictive measures.

In recent years, Western countries have increasingly coordinated sanctions against Iranian officials following repeated crackdowns on protests and accusations of cross-border intimidation operations.

Human rights groups have repeatedly urged governments to increase pressure on Tehran, saying protesters and civil society activists continue to face arrests, violence, and heavy restrictions.

The latest sanctions signal continued international scrutiny of Iran’s internal security policies as Western governments seek coordinated responses to ongoing tensions.
