Lebanon and Syria have signed an agreement to transfer over 300 Syrian detainees from Lebanese prisons to continue their sentences in Syria. The deal, signed Friday in Beirut, aims to improve relations between the two countries. Implementation begins Saturday. Lebanon's Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri and Syria's Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais expressed hope that this step will boost confidence and progress relations. The agreement only covers Syrian prisoners, not Lebanese citizens. Lebanon and Syria have a complicated history, with tensions remaining after Syria's military presence ended in 2005 and Assad's fall in 2024.
