Japan’s Sanae Takayuchi wins decisive parliamentary victory
Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takayuchi, secures a commanding parliamentary win, gaining control over the lower house and key legislation.
Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), under Prime Minister Sanae Takayuchi, emerged victorious in the country’s parliamentary elections.
The LDP, together with its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, won over two-thirds of the seats in the lower house.
This decisive victory positions the ruling party to potentially control the upper house and pass legislation previously blocked.
Takayuchi stated she will retain her current cabinet and implement economic policies, including tax cuts, to strengthen Japan’s economy.
She became Japan’s first female prime minister in September following Shigero Ishiba’s resignation and modeled her leadership on former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Under Shigero Ishiba, the Liberal Democratic Party had lost control of both houses of parliament, prompting his resignation amid internal party pressures.
Following her appointment, Takayuchi called for early elections, using the opportunity to secure a strong mandate from voters nationwide.
The election victory reinforces Takayuchi’s position, giving her party the authority to advance its policy agenda and shape Japan’s political future.
