Spread by mosquitoes, chikungunya causes fever, joint pain, rashes, and fatigue, with some facing prolonged joint pain for months to years. The CDC advises preventive measures, which includes insect repellent, long-sleeved clothing, and staying in screened or air-conditioned regions, as well as vaccination for visitors.
