Why Tottenham fans should be concerned by Mauricio Pochettino's 'not enough' comment - Opinion
Mauricio Pochettino has delivered a message which has gone down well with Tottenham Hotspur supporters, but it highlights one big problem about his potential return as manager.
Thomas Frank will not be in charge of Tottenham Hotspur next season after the Spurs hierarchy finally pulled the plug on his tenure this week.
This leaves the door wide open for Mauricio Pochettino to make his return to North London, following the expiration of his US national team contract after the World Cup.
Many Spurs fans would be open to the Argentine coming back for a second spell, as they continue to cherish the unforgettable memories of the mid to late ‘10s.
However, Pochettino was never able to lift silverware at Tottenham, and his current mentality indicates this could continue if he takes charge of the Europa League holders next season.
Mauricio Pochettino will neglect the FA Cup and Carabao Cup
No one can deny that Pochettino was an excellent manager at Tottenham. In fact, he is one of the greatest to have occupied the home dugout at Spurs in recent times.
Despite this, there is no better feeling than winning a trophy, and it means everything, whether it is the Champions League, Europa League or even the Carabao Cup.
Pochettino might not agree though, as the ex-Spurs boss recently said winning the Europa League was not enough for the club. He also placed the League Cup and FA Cup in the same category, claiming Tottenham have to be competing for the two biggest trophies on offer.
Such calls for Spurs to do more could be seen as a jibe at the club’s unambitious ownership, so it will go down well with a lot of fans.
However, it shows that if Pochettino returns to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he could repeat the mistake of fielding weakened teams in the competitions he views as less important.
Spurs cannot realistically challenge for the Premier League
It would take years for Pochettino to get Spurs even close to winning the English top flight. Currently, relegation to the Championship is not even off the cards in N17.
As well as this, Tottenham are unlikely to be playing in Europe at all next season, so winning the Champions League will not be an option.
Pochettino’s comments are understandable, and he would be expected to get the Lilywhites competing in the league again. However, this cannot come at the expense of never winning trophies.
Ange Postecoglou knew what it meant for Spurs fans to win the Europa League, and Pochettino must realise this too.
Realistically, this is a club that is years away from winning anything bigger than an FA Cup, but lift that trophy and no one is complaining. That should be what the Argentine aims for if he makes the switch back to Tottenham.
